It is a multi-storied stone pagoda of Wondangam Hermitage in Haeinsa Temple,
where the Eighty Thousand Great Sutra is located and the birthplace of the national
religion to defense the nation. This is a unique pagoda that the main body is
made of slate, the common stone used to make ink-stones.
The foundation is three tierred with granite stones. The stairs and the roof
stones consist of slate stones.
The stair is encarved with lotus design, and marble pillars were placed on
the four corners of top of stair. The cover stone on the pillars were also encarved
with lotus design. The body stones of the main body are missing, leaving only
the ten-storied roof stones. The roof stones, straight and thin, have three-stepped
cornices under them. The eaves are slightly upwards.
The finial of pagoda is made of granite, however, only a tray and a bowl
on the tray are remaining now. Slate pagodas became popular in the Goryeo Period,
however, this pagoda was erected in the Unified Silla Period. This stone lantern next to the pagoda was built in the same period.
The lantern consists of the base, the pedestal and the roof stone. The base
and the roof are of slate, and other components are of granite.
The light chamber is missing. The letters, 'the upper (上) and the lower
(下)', are inscribed in the pedestal. The upper side of the hexagon roof stone
is rather straight. Of ornamental top is a column-shaped stone.
