Gwaebul
is a large banner painting used in Buddhist temples during big ceremonies or
dharma meetings. The banner painting of Mihwangsa is from the Joseon Dynasty,
mostly filled with the large portrait of the Buddha at the center, while the
dragon king and queen are depicted in the lower part.
The Buddha’s eyes, ears, nose, and mouth are rather small, and the
unisa (fleshy protrusion, one of the 32 physical signs of the Buddha) is distinctly
depicted on the crown of the head. Created during the reign of Yeongjo in 1727,
this painting shows typical patterns of the late 18th century. It is an outstanding
work of art that reveals the calm and visionary world of the Buddha.
